Bestmed employees (aka Heartbeats) generously contributed towards a COVID-19 relief fund in 2020 to help underprivileged communities. The total amount donated was R624 991.73. Heartbeats had the opportunity to vote which charity organisation would be the beneficiary of the relief fund. The funds were split between Operation Hunger and Palesa pads.
Bestmed completed its distribution of Palesa Pads kits and Operation Hunger food parcels in Gauteng during November and December 2020. Heartbeats Karen Cooper (Sponsorship and CSI Specialist) and Anni Wolf (Business Development Specialist) were joined by fellow Heartbeats Yvonne Moloto, Mpho Mpfuni, Emma Prigge and Lungile Makhushe to distribute 1 175 food parcels and 1 380 Palesa Pads kits. Residents of Benoni, Soweto, Katlehong, Muleleke, Rondubult, Tembisa, Ngobi Village, Shoshanguve, Johannesburg South, Alexandra and Mamelodi East benefited.
Operation Hunger provides a monthly feeding scheme for about 5000 vulnerable families in 43 rural areas and informal settlements countrywide.
Palesa Pads are high-quality cloth pads that are washable and can be used for up to five years, ensuring that girls have the opportunity to stay in school. Donated kits included three pads, a bucket, cleaning materials to wash the pads and a drying clip.
