So, you’ve run out of surface cleaner…and you’re broke. There are other great effective ways to clean and disinfect your home without breaking the bank or looking further than inside your pantry for a few household staples. Plus, they’re not just safe for you and your family to use, they’re environmentally friendly too.
Lemons
Mix lemon juice with bicarbonate of soda or vinegar to make a paste, or sprinkle bicarb over the cut section on half a lemon to scrub surfaces and dishes. Lemon and bicarb also kill bacteria, deodorise, remove stains (test it on a hidden area first) and make glass sparkle.
You can also mix half a cup of lemon juice with one cup of olive oil to use as hardwood furniture polish. There are so many great ways to apply lemon in your home.
Vinegar
Mix equal parts water and vinegar in a spray bottle to clean and deodorize your all kitchen surfaces (except marble), including your stove and appliances. You can also clean your bath, sink and toilet with the vinegar solutions to remove soap scum and hard water stains on your taps, drains and tiles. You can even use the mixture to clean your floors and your washing machine.
Bicarbonate of soda
Bicarbonate of soda is a great non-abrasive surface cleaner and deodoriser. Use it to scrub all bathroom and kitchen surfaces. It’s best used with half a lemon, lemon juice or vinegar to scrub and disinfect surfaces.
Ethanol rubbing alcohol
There are many great uses for ethanol rubbing alcohol at home. It can kill bacteria, remove stains and make surfaces shine. Use it to clean kitchen sinks, basins and taps, as well as cell phones, keyboards and remote controls. The alcohol will evaporate, so there’s no need to rinse or wipe dry.
